ENTERPRISING
IDEAS
FINANCIAL OPPORTUNITIES:
Think and Be Rewarded!
One of the wonders of the exploration of the benefits of socially responsible business models is
the opportunity it gives nonprofits and inventive for-profits to discover new activities that advance
our cause and generate revenues.
We already know that the financial markets of tomorrow will not be like those of the past. With any
luck, the re-regulation of investor expectations could well include great ideas like those
developed by groups like the Aspen Institute and those committed to giving
Allan Shore, our chief bottle-washer and 22-year executive consultant, has been involved for
many years with the creation of several new and exciting ideas, some of which were originally
developed with business enterprising elements. The following are some of the most interesting
projects that have already had some success.
We present these ideas mostly as a form of inspiration for leaders like yourself to consider.
Selling tee-shirts or buying someone else's franchise are not the only ways to advance the cause
of creative entrepreneurism for the growing business sector that values progress.
Micro-Merchandising -- Imagine integrating small-scale,
touch-sensitive technology into our lives. These technology
advances can help connect small businesses and literally allow
average people to share their shopping struggles. Watch here
as Venture Charities jumps into the Shark Tank (a new reality
show in the making!)
Take Our Daughters To Work Day -- Today this
project, which started in the 1990s, has changed its name to
include boys as a key part of the project. Initially, however, the
idea was to have a focus on girls and the challenges women
faced in the work place. Much like the "Fair Trade" phenomenon,
this social fairness initiative could have been a leap forward for
gender justice.
Rubicon Programs, Inc. -- This tremendously
innovative nonprofit, located in Richmond, California, developed
about 20 years ago as a grounds maintenance and food service
vocational training project for persons with severe mental and
emotional disabilities. Allan wrote some of the original grants
and funding strategies. Today, the project is highlighted in many
places and is developing a Social Innovation project to create
even more exciting opportunities.
